Best Reading Comprehension, Strong reading comprehension of students is the ultimate goal of all the reading teachers. But with it comes lots of different reading skills that students should understand what they are reading. Students in upper elementary classrooms are mostly struggling readers.

There can be many reasons for this struggle; however, if a student cannot read a passage well, it will create reading comprehension difficulties. Let’s have a look at the best reading comprehension strategies for upper elementary students.

Implement background knowledge

When students get a chance to approach a new book or passage, they benefit from their prior knowledge and make relevant connections to the text. Suppose students have any personal experience or the necessary schema to activate. In that case, they must activate and use prior knowledge to make new connections and comprehend the text to the next level.

Make inferences Best Reading Comprehension

Making inference simply means reading between the lines to interpret the text. It is one of the crucial comprehension strategies for upper elementary students. Students use clues between the lines combined with their schema to predict something which is not written in the text.

This kind of thinking is precisely what is needed in our today’s generation. If students can make detailed inferences, it means they are reading the text with full attention.

Text visualization means students must be able to visualize what’s going on in the text. It should be like a movie where everything is happening in order and playing in a student’s head. In the narrative text, it is easy to imagine the characters all the settings and events taking place.

The understanding passage is fundamental because if a student can’t understand a text, they will not be able to visualize it.

Discussion of what students have read

Giving students a chance to read is also a great strategy to help students develop strong reading skills. An open-ended discussion can benefit beyond anyone can imagine. This way, they will be talking about their reading with a partner during buddy reading.

Asking the question about their reading and making your questions complex and thought-provoking on purpose can also stimulate discussion.

Color coding the notes Best Reading Comprehension

This is one of the effective reading comprehension strategies for upper elementary students. It helps teach them non-fiction reading comprehension. Teaching students to color-code their understanding and stories are beneficial in developing reading skills and knowledge of the text.

Remember, this color coding strategy is only effective if students have read the questions/text first with full attention, then they can go back to mark the answer/understanding by color.

In a culturally diverse class, there are various types of readers, and only a few will be skilled readers. While the most struggle with their reading ability. Students might have good reading comprehension skills, but they won’t have enough strategies to use them.

So, analyzing students’ abilities accordingly and helping them to develop the best reading comprehension is a teacher’s responsibility. As a result, they will implement all those strategies slowly but definitely.
