pop culture influence education, Being an educator, if you have found out a way to engage your students by making real-world related lessons for students, then you have scored a win. Using popular culture in the classroom is also one of the most effective winning strategies.

Students spend most of their time on smartphones, tablets, or other digital devices in this digital world. It makes sense, bringing those things in learning which are meaningful and students are interested in pop culture influence education.

So, connecting learning material to pop culture, including music, celebrity statements on the current situation, or magazines, can be the most acceptable way to encourage students to participate in class discussions. This way, they speak up and think critically and collaborate with teachers and students.

Frank Baker, the founder of the Media Literacy Clearinghouse, said, “Pop culture can be that catalyst to reading and to literacy of pop culture influence education”

Pop culture offers an opportunity for teachers to meet the students where they belong as students spend most of their time interacting with pop culture. So integrating pop culture into lessons allows teachers to use time more efficiently and productively.

The 2010 Kaiser Family Institute report indicated that our youth ages between 8-18 spend at least 7.5 hours daily, seven days weekly using social media, which include TV, music, video games, and books. It’s up to 53 hours weekly which can be potentially invested into learning pop culture influence education.

Considering the interest of students allows educators to communicate with their students in a better way. Students who don’t feel comfortable speaking up and are interested in discussing historical details are more likely to open up when you are talking about a popular YouTube video or any sports team.

However, bringing pop culture into the classroom doesn’t always mean it’s related to learning; it can allow teachers to steal students’ attention who don’t feel like a part of the classroom.

History professor Clay Morgan says, “Let them tell you about their world, and you will have a much easier time telling them about yours” and “Effective teaching hinges upon communication, and you can’t communicate without entering into the world of those you wish to reach”

No doubt, pop culture has deeply infused itself into the various spheres of our lives. In this digital age, the influence of pop culture is even more vital than ever before. No one can imagine spending time without using a TV, a mobile phone, and reading comic magazines.

It’s a long-standing phenomenon that inspires millions of people and students with no exception at all. Youth views pop culture as a source of entertainment and inspiration. This ultimately leads to successful learning.

Whatever it is, pop culture has much potential to be used as a teaching and learning tool. There must be positive ways to integrate it into teaching practice in delivering lesson plans and assessments in courses. However, nothing comes without having problems or pitfalls, and the same is true for pop culture.

Its excessive use can cause distraction in class which is not desirable in learning. Excess of everything is terrible, so being an educator, you must be smart enough to decide where, when, and how to use it effectively.
