What Every Upper Elementary according to the National Reading Panel Report, a student requires a minimum of 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading time each day to improve their reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. A reading block for the upper elementary class should have the following for the best reading experience.
01 – Independent Reading
Independent reading time is essential for students of the upper elementary. They must improve their endurance and be able to read for long periods of time. All of my kids complete an independent reading center every day, and some of them do it twice a day.
Students choose books for reading while applying reading skills learned in our reading mini-lessons during independent reading.
02 – Reading Response Center
This reading center complements independent reading nicely (and is one of the ways that I keep my students accountable for their independent reading). I use the reader’s response in my classroom by having my students write bi-weekly letters on the book. Students write to me in their notebooks or share their responses with their partners.
I prefer to mix things up and offer a variety of write-about reading opportunities in addition to the reader’s response letters to keep my kids engaged and challenged.
03 – What Every Upper Elementary Informational Text Center
The reading center for informational texts is an excellent addition to the reading block rotations. I can introduce students to various factual themes and different sorts of informational text through my reading center. This center allows me to focus my kids’ interests while incorporating science and social studies into reading.
I’ve amassed a library of books that relate to our science and social studies courses over the years. I pick out the books corresponding to the new topic and place them in the center when I introduce them.
04 – Poetry Center
What Every Upper Elementary I like to establish a poetry reading center in the reading block, similar to the informational reading center, to expose my kids to a range of poems. I have a couple of poetry collection books and occasionally printed pieces that I know my students would appreciate and poetry response activity cards for this center.
During the center, students read a poem and use task cards to respond to it.
05 – Partner Reading
One of my students’ favorite reading centers is partner reading. I prefer to keep things interesting at my partner’s reading center by offering a variety of options. My students and I have read novels together on occasion. They read and discuss the same book at times and their independent reading book at other times.
Partner reading is also a fantastic center for having children read grade-level passages that emphasize specific skills with their partners. Individuals who read at a lower grade level benefit much from reading grade-level content with a partner in this format. Since both students now have more challenging text to read, they can help each other out.
